The Walking Dead: Aaron and Jerry fight off new zombie variant that can open doors and climb walls

Aaron and Jerry came across a new kind of zombie that can open doors and climb walls on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead during its final season on AMC.

The season 11 episode titled Variant introduced a game changer for the survivors while Aaron [Ross Marquand] and Jerry [Cooper Andrews] were on the road with Lydia [Cassady McClincy] and Elijah [Okea Eme-Akwari].

While heading to Oceanside with supplies from the Commonwealth, the group came across a herd of zombies and decided to go off-road with their wagon.

The growling herd continued trundling down the road, but one zombie was shown stopping and looking away into the forest.

Aaron, Jerry, Lydia and Elijah hid out in a walled community after Jerry injured his knee, but strange sounds were heard during the night.

Lydia and Aaron were on guard duty and during a sweep came across the herd.

‘We gotta get to Eli and Jerry now!,’ Aaron yelled as the herd swarmed them.

The group tried to fight off the dozens of zombies outside before they all went inside as the zombies rushed them.

Jerry noticed the door knob turning and the door opening as a zombie tried to enter.

‘What the hell? Since when do the dead use frickin’ doorknobs!,’ Jerry shouted as he slammed the door shut.

‘Whisperers,’ said Aaron, referencing the group that wore zombie masks while mingling among the undead.

Aaron told Lydia and Elijah to climb onto the roof while they held back the zombies.

Jerry joined them on top, followed by Aaron and they devised a plan to separate the Whisperers from the rest of the herd.

A zombie was then showing climbing up a wall to the roof and grabbing a rock as it approached Jerry.

Aaron attacked it and repeatedly punched the walker and ripped off its face, exposing a snarling skull.

He stabbed it to death as he realized it wasn’t a Whisperer.

‘How the hell did a walker do that?,’ Jerry said.

The herd dissipated and the next morning Aaron examined the corpse.

‘So, what do you think it was? Like an aberration or something?,’ Jerry asked.

‘Well, there’s roamers and lurkers. I mean, we’ve all seen some that come back to the places that they remember. I’ve heard stories about walkers like this that can climb walls and open doors. I was never sure if they were just stories. Maybe there’s other kinds too. I hope not,’ Aaron said.

The episode opened with chaos in the Commonwealth plaza after a group of purposefully unleashed zombies attacked protesters and killed Sebastian Milton [Teo Rapp-Olsson], the son of Commonwealth governor Pamela Milton [Laila Robins].

A woman identified Eugene Porter [Josh McDermitt] as being responsible for Sebastian’s death and he was ushered to safety by Daryl Dixon [Norman Reedus].

Pamela tended to the mauled corpse of her son as Commonwealth military general Michael Mercer [Michael James Shaw] looked on.

She demanded that Eugene be found and arrested to be made an example of in exchange for lenience with his sister Max Mercer [Margot Bingham].

Rosita was questioned by Mercer who urged her to tell Eugene to turn himself in.

Mercer said he knew that Eugene would eventually be found with her since they were like family.

‘He comes to me, shows remorse and wants to cooperate, it’ll go a long way toward helping everyone involved. But if he or you and your people make this harder than it has to be, no one goes anywhere, and things only get worse for all of you,’ Rosita said.

Rosita chuckled at his remark and left the room.

Surrender terms: 'He comes to me, shows remorse and wants to cooperate, it'll go a long way toward helping everyone involved. But if he or you and your people make this harder than it has to be, no one goes anywhere, and things only get worse for all of you,' Rosita said

She then met up with Daryl who was hiding Eugene in the church.

Eugene asked about Max’s whereabouts and Rosita said she’d look for her so they could get both of them out.

Juanita “Princess” Sanchez [Paola Lázaro] spoke with Mercer about Eugene and lobbied on his behalf.

‘What is the point of this place if a good man is put to death?,’ Princess asked him.

Max was caught and Mercer urged her to sign a false statement blaming the unrest on Eugene and accepting a pardon.

‘They are trying to execute you for treason. I’m trying to save you,’ Mercer said.

Pamela visited her deputy governor Lance Hornsby [Josh Hamilton] in his cell and he admitted to setting loose the zombies to get her attention.

He admitted taking a gamble that ended up in Sebastian’s death and Pamela made him gamble with a coin for his life.

Lance won and Pamela that he was ‘100 percent at the Milton family’s disposal.”

‘I know you are, Lance,’ Pamela said as her zombie son entered the room.

‘I don’t understand,’ Lance said.

‘Like you said, you’re at the family’s disposal. Thanks to you, this is all that’s left,’ Pamela said before leaving Lance locked in his cell with her zombie son.

Princess told Ezekiel and Mercer that she was leaving after realizing the Commonwealth wasn’t for her.

Eugene also broke it to Rosita that he wasn’t going to leave Max behind.

‘I know it’s not logical, but matters of the heart rarely are. I also know if I leave now, there won’t be any kind of life worth living. Being with Maxxine has made me better, better than I ever thought I could be,’ Eugene said.

He gave Rosita his necklace as a gift for her daughter Coco and was then shown confessing to causing Sebastian’s death.

Eugene said he acted alone and Maxxine had nothing to do with any of it.

She fought back valiantly but her attackers got the upper hand and covered her head with a black bag as the episode ended.

The Walking Dead will return next week on AMC.
